Brief generic drug update

by Caleb Reading

Common drugs that have been available for awhile but I forgot to post an update:

Amaryl (Glimepiride)

Zithromax (azithromycin) in 250 mg (Zpack) and 500 mg (Tripack) tablets (not sure if the liquids are out yet)

Floxin (Oflaxacin)

Available as generic just recently:

Flonase (fluticasone)

Available very soon (on pre-order right now):

Pravachol (pravastatin)

Supposed to be available, but isn’t yet:

Zocor (simvastatin). Merck got a patent extension by suing the first generic company that filed an ANDA with the FDA. These companies sue for “patent infringement” (even when it’s unreasonable to do so) to try to get an 18-month patent extension to make more money. It used to be possible to sue over and over, but that’s reformed now and they can only file one frivilous lawsuit to get a patent extension at the patients’ expense.

Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is supposed to be coming out as generic soon as well, but it’s not available yet. I’m looking forward to this one. The majority of our patients can’t even fill Levaquin scripts because of the high cost (even the ones paying a 25% coinsurance usually can’t afford it). I think it’s around $10 a pill. Hopefully it’ll drop in price as quickly as Cipro did.

Might be available as generics soon or may already be out (I’m not sure about these):

  • Dynacirc
  • Norco
  • Plavix
  • Xanax XR
  • Androgel
  • Commit
  • Norvasc
  • Altace
  • Retrovir
